tips
Who are you targeting?
Save yourself time and money in the long run, by thinking about customers not so much in broad terms like gender or age group, but about what's happening in their lives which makes them more likely to want your product or service.
It's vital that the medium/s you choose are relevant to your target and their lifestyle.
Talk one-to-one. Do you have an ideal customer in mind? Imagine they're a friend...talk to them not at them.
The Competition
Research is key. How do you really stack up against your competition? Do you/will you seek honest feedback? Have you checked out your competition online? If you have a website, does it rank highly in search results?
U.S.P / P.O.D - it's good to be better, but better to be different!
A lot of copywriting advice focuses on pushing a Unique Selling Point or Point of Difference. If it's not obvious what it is, ideas unltd! can help clarify it. It can be fact-based, or more about creating perception / personality.
No P.O.D? Something small and quirky about the business or product could be developed into a memorable and likeable identity.
If your existing copywriting could have a competitor's name in it and it would still work / ring true...time for a re-think.
Keep it clear
Avoid 'fluff'. Drill down to the strongest benefits your service or product/s offer. Too hard? Find someone who can be objective and edit out superfluous copy. Some will argue that 'long' copy is the way to go...but keep in mind most people are time-poor.
Balance style with substance. E.g. when people are searching on the Net, they're usually looking for helpful information fast - give it to them, and a clear path to find it. Skim reading rules online!
Websites
Take SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) seriously. If you don't know what SEO is, hire someone who does but learn about it yourself too.
Understand what Keywords are and commit to updating website copy regularly even if it's just a tweak - it can help keep Search Engines 'interested' in your site.
NB: Website companies usually expect you to provide finished copy. The website price may only provide a limited number of hours for inserting copy into the website / or you may have to insert copy yourself.
